Sleep ApneaSleep apnea is a serious condition that occurs when you stop breathing while you sleep. The episodes usually last greater that 10 seconds and can happen multiple times in an hour. Repeated and untreated sleep apnea can reduce blood oxygen levels, causing the heart to pump harder. This can lead to long term problems such as high blood pressure. What Causes Sleep Apnea? The causes of sleep apnea are similar to the same causes of snoring. (See Snoring.) No matter what the cause the end result is the same. The tissue in the back of the throat collapses blocking airflow. Signs And Symptoms
