Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of your nose and sinuses. When the lining of your nose and sinuses are chronically inflamed is when polyps develop. Just what causes the chronic inflammation isn’t always clear.

Nasal polyps can occur in anyone, but are more common in people over 40 and in adults and children with sinus problems, allergies, hay fever and asthma.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Polyps are usually small, soft and pearl colored, with a jelly-like consistency. Sometimes they can be seen by simply up into the nostrils. They can be alone or form in a cluster like grapes. Whether large or small, they usually obstruct the airways in your nose, making it difficult to breathe. They may also cause persistent runny nose and stuffiness. They will cause chronic sinus infections. You may also notice a loss or decrease in your sense of smell. Polyps may also cause dull headaches and snoring.

TREATMENTS

Your doctor will usually prescribe a nasal steroidal spray to decrease the swelling of the tissue in your nose and sinuses.

Other medical treatments

………..oral corticosteroids to reduce swelling.

…………..medications to control allergies and infections.

…………..antifungal medications.

SURGERY

Medications are not always effective, you may need to have them removed surgically. The type of surgery depends on the size and number of polyps. Polypectomy. A microdebrider can be used to remove single or isolated polyps. It is a small suction device that cuts and extracts soft tissue. It is usually done on an outpatient basis. Endoscopic sinus surgery. This procedure is more extensive since it not only removes the polyps but opens up the sinuses as well. A tiny flexible scope is used to guide the surgeon into the sinus cavity to examine and excise the tissue lining.

Dr. Liudahl and his staff provide over 18 years of experience with sinus surgery and polyp removal. He and his staff will take the time to review your options and discuss benefits and risks of treatment.
