Nasal Fracture or Broken Nose

   

 

Symptoms

  1. Pain
  2. - Blood coming from the nose after injury
  3. - Bruising around the eyes.
  4. -Misshapen appearance (after swelling subsides)
  5. -Signs of trauma
  6. -Difficulty breathing through the nose

First Aid

  1. Keep the person calm.
  2. Breathe through the mouth and lean forward in a sitting position in order to keep blood from going down the back of the throat.
  3. Apply cold compresses to the nose to reduce swelling. If possible, the person should hold the compress so that excessive pressure is not applied.
  4. To relieve pain, acetaminophen is recommended.

Do Not

  1. Do not try to straighten a broken nose.
  2. Do not move the person if there is reason to suspect a head or neck injury.
CALL FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
  1. If you suspect head or neck injury.
  2. If you are unable to stop the bleeding.
  3. If there is clear fluid draining continuously from the nose.
  4. If the person is having trouble breathing.

PREVENTION

  1. Protective headgear should be worn while playing contact sports, riding bicycle, skateboards, and rollerblades or roller-skates.
  2. Seatbelts and appropriate car seats should be used.
